Suggestions during the meeting
Advisors may want to ask clarifying questions to understand reasoning for returning to Virginia Tech.
These questions may include:
- What the student is most concerned about?
- What is the student's intended major path and has it remained the same or has changed?
- Are there any other possible majors/minors that they are considering?
- What campus resources could help them to succeed in their first semester back at VT?
- Discuss any changes in the curriculum since they left
Returning Student Finances
Tuition Cost and Due Dates
Returning students may have questions regarding the costs of tuition, fees, and options for financial aid.
- Cost of Attendance
- Due dates
- For further questions, contact the Bursar’s Office
Financial Aid
Student financial aid eligibility may have changed while they were away. Students should be referred to University Scholarships and Financial Aid if they are anticipating aid from other sources other than their college or department.
Students that are returning should file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and must follow standard FAFSA deadlines.
Returning students may have additional requirement for Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) for Financial Aid. Once they file the FAFSA, they must speak to University Scholarships and Financial Aid if they have additional questions.
Returning Students and Policy 91
- Policy 91 is still applicable to returning students and if they are not eligible to current major due to academic circumstances, refer to Transitional Advising
- Read more about University Policy 91
Transfer Credit
- If the returning student was enrolled at another institution while away, they may need to refer to the Transfer Credit Guide maintained by the University Registrar
Plans for Academic Success and Other Resources
- Students will want to have an established Academic Plan for Success if they had left on or returned from academic probation.
- This may include follow-up conversations about GPA requirements for continued enrollment at Virginia Tech.
Possible Support Services and Campus Resources
- Besides academics, advisors may touch upon an acceptable school, life, and extracurricular balance now that they have returned.
